Tips for Painting Indoor & Outdoor Furniture

Painting Outdoor Furniture?

Your very first step should be to scrub it down with just a bit of dish soap and hot water. Let it air dry, then scrape off any old paint so it’s smooth and clean.

Sometimes I like to use a leaf blower to get all the dust off.

Using Exterior Paint? Prime first!

Use a small, firm rolling brush and high-quality paint brush. You can also use an outdoor spray paint. But make sure it’s a high-quality version and that you’re in a well-ventilated area outside.

Protect any hard surfaces you’re painting on — whether it be with newspaper or cardboard.

You’ll want to use about three-coats of paint for outdoor furniture. Very important! If you’re painting plastic furniture, be sure to get spray paint designed specifically for plastic furniture.

Painting Indoor Furniture?

My favorite go to for indoor furniture is chalk paint! I love the matte finish, and then I choose a wax finish to seal it and add a nice coating at the end.

If you truly are going to DIY at home, be sure to clean your funirture piece first using a bit of rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth. Then lightly sand the piece.

Whether using a spray paint or paint with a brush, be sure to do very light coats of paint so it does not streak. I always apply three coats, before adding a wax finish to seal it.

If you’d like to get a little help, I recommend either renting a sprayer from Home Depot or Loews or your local hardware store, or reaching out to a professional for some help, such as a local cabinet painting shop or furniture shop.
